My Review

Barbara Stanwyck delivered an exciting performance as America’s most famous female sharpshooter in “Annie Oakley.” Director George Stevens (“Swing Time” 1936) and screenwriters Joel Sayre and John Twist gave Stanwyck the best possible material and production values to work with.

The supporting cast includes Preston Foster, Melvyn Douglas, Pert Kelton, Chief Thunderbird as Sitting Bull, and Moroni Olsen as Col. William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Oakley became famous from being a part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, a traveling rodeo-style entertainment. She lived from 1860 to 1926, so the people putting this film together were contemporaries of Annie Oakley.

The immensely entertaining “Annie Oakley” from RKO Pictures was an early career mark for both Barbara Stanwyck and George Stevens.
