My Review

“Topaz” is an Alfred Hitchcock film about a French intelligence officer who becomes involved in Cold War politics as a Soviet ring of spies in France is discovered just before the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The movie contains much of the famous Hitchcock suspense, but with a more complex plot (like “Marnie” of 1964) than many of his earlier pictures; and not as popular with the public as were his 1950’s movies, i.e. “Rear Window” (1954). The screenplay was written by Samuel A. Taylor, adapted from the 1967 novel of the same name by Leon Uris.

Czech actor Frederick Stafford played the lead role of French agent Andre Devereaux. Stafford was in numerous spy films, and Hitch used his image and acting range to the fullest here. The international supporting cast includes Dany Robin, John Vernon, Karin Dor, Claude Jade, Michel Subor, Michel Piccoli, Phillipe Noiret, Roscoe Lee Browne, John Van Dreelen, and John Forsythe.

The watchable “Topaz” is an exciting view on DVD, with numerous deleted scenes restored, from legendary producer-director Alfred Hitchcock and Universal Pictures.
