When one thinks of an English nanny who magically arrives and solves all of your problems, the mind naturally turns to Mary Poppins. However, Emma Thompson had other ideas when she wrote the screenplay for “Nanny McPhee,” adapted from the series of children’s books called “Nurse Matilda” by Christianna Brand, the first one published in 1964.
Thompson herself plays the less-than-attractive nanny, with warts and dental problems that contrast with Julie Andrew’s perfect Poppins. McPhee does have great wisdom in dealing with problem children, flawlessly portrayed by Thompson under the wise guidance of director Kirk Jones (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” 2016).
The story holds viewer’s interest from start to finish, aided by a supporting cast that includes Colin Firth, Thomas Sangster, Kelly Macdonald, and big screen veteran Angela Lansbury as Aunt Adelaide. The entertaining and watchable “Nanny McPhee” was a hit at the box office from StudioCanal, Nanny McPhee Productions, Working Title Films, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
