Stunning Mediterranean scenery, big name stars, and opulent lifestyles of the jet set are all components of “The Greek Tycoon.” Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset do a fantastic job of portraying characters based on Aristotle and Jacqueline Onassis in this glossy soap opera motion picture.
The film was smoothly directed by J. Lee Thompson (“The Guns of Navarone” 1961) from a wonderful screenplay by Morton S. Fine. It was not a big hit at the box office in 1978, nor well received by critics at the time. “The Greek Tycoon” is a throwback to movies like “Peyton Place” or “The Carpetbaggers” of the 1950’s or 1960’s.
There is great chemistry between Quinn and Bisset as Ari and Jackie O, popular icons of the 1960’s and 1970’s. These top stars do a good job of capturing the pair’s personas. The supporting cast includes Edward Albert as Alexander Onassis, James Franciscus as John Kennedy, Marilu Tolo as Maria Callas, Robin Clarke as Robert Kennedy, and Roland Culver as Winston Churchill. Other actors are Charles Durning, Luciana Paluzzi, Camilla Sparv, and Raf Vallone.
Besides shooting in Athens and other parts of Greece, the watchable “The Greek Tycoon” was also filmed in London, New York City, and Washington, D. C. This Universal Pictures product is a wonderful view on DVD today.
