My Review

“Father Stu” is the interesting true story of a boxer who becomes a Catholic priest, and eventually is stricken with a muscle disorder that hinders his ability to perform the duties of his ministry. The film was well put together by Rosalind Ross in her first motion picture effort; she not only directed, but wrote the screenplay as well.

Mark Wahlberg delivered a good performance in the title role as Stuart Long; the part was well within his range as an actor, similar in a general way to his Oscar-nominated role as a policeman in “The Departed,” the Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards of 2006.

The supporting cast includes Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver as Long’s parents, Malcolm McDowell as Monsignor Kelly, as well as Teresa Ruiz, Aaron Moten, Cody Fern, and Carlos Leal. Filmed on a lean budget of four million dollars, “Father Stu” was a modest hit at the box office, thanks to new director-screenwriter Rosalind Ross, producer Mark Wahlberg, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures.
