The Best Picture Oscar of 2022 goes to…..”Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Directors-screenwriters Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (known as “The Daniels”) deliberately blend and bend the conventional motion picture boundaries in this “absurdist” story of a woman who is being audited by the Internal Revenue Service and finds out about different versions of herself in parallel universes who must all cooperate to prevent the destruction of the multiverse. The innovation of the Daniels has created an interesting and compelling film that was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won seven.
The cast is headed by the talented Hollywood veteran Michelle Yeoh, who has been in films for decades but first came to prominence as a James Bond girl in “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997). She had her work cut out for her in “Everything” and pulls it off quite well. Michelle is the first person from southwest Asia (Malaysia) to win the Best Actress Oscar, and one of the oldest at age 60.
The supporting cast includes Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong, and another tinseltown veteran Jamie Lee Curtis. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is an independent production from directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who also produced with Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. It has earned everything (lots of cash) everywhere at the domestic and global box office.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has awarded seven Oscars (out of eleven nominations) to “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which includes Best Picture of 2022, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Editing, and Best Screenplay.
