My Review

Two years after his initial visit to Southern California, Detroit police detective Axel Foley returns to help his friends investigate a series of high-valued heists called the Alphabet Crimes in “Beverly Hills Cop II.” Director Tony Scott (“Top Gun” 1986) does a good job of developing a quality sequel starring Eddie Murphy and the same core of actors. The well written screenplay by Larry Ferguson and Warren Skaaren was developed from a story by Murphy and Robert D. Wachs.

The stars of the show include Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, Ronny Cox, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, Jurgen Prochnow, Bridgett Nielsen, Dean Stockwell, Gil Hill, Tommy “Tiny” Lister, John Hostetter, Robert Pastorelli, Chris Rock, and Hugh Hefner in a cameo appearance as himself. The very watchable “Beverly Hills Cop II” was a huge hit at the box office for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Eddie Murphy Productions, Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, and Paramount Pictures.

This third highest grossing film of 1987 was nominated for one Academy Award, for Best Original Song, “Shakedown,” performed by Bob Sever, music by Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey, and lyrics by Faltermeyer, Forsey, and Seger. Other movies in the franchise include “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984), “Beverly Hills Cop III” (1994), and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” (2024).
