My Review

“The Friend” is a drama film about a writer whose friend bequests her with his Great Dane dog, with whom she has enormous problems . Directors-screenwriters Scott McGehee and David Seigel put together a sentimental tale which primarily appeals to dog lovers and the art house cinema crowd. Most people would simply resolve the large dog situation, and the movie, by taking him to the nearest animal shelter. The script was adapted from the 2018 novel of the same name by Sigrid Nunez.

The cast seems to struggle with the reality of the situation, with Naomi Watts in the lead role. There were large segments of the film which were simply boring. Watts appears to be sleep-walking during much of her time on screen, and deserves no credit for taking on this tedious and dull motion picture. It is no surprise that the untalented and often obnoxious Bill Murray is cast in the part of her “friend.”

Co-stars include Carla Gugino, Sarah Pidgeon, Constance Wu, Ann Dowd, Noma Dumezweni, Felix Solis, Gina Costigan, Josh Paris, Tom McCarthy, Bruce Norris, and Owen Teague. The unwatchable malarkey “The Friend” was a flop at the box office for producers McGehee & Seigel, 3dot Productions, Big Creek Productions, Focus Features, and Universal Pictures.
