My Review

“State Fair” tells the story of a brother and sister who find romance and good clean fun at the Texas state fair, with their parents and others’ involvements in the numerous activities. It is generally recognized that director Jose Ferrer erred in miscasting some of the major characters and instilled inferior production values into the project. Bad reviews and major financial losses in theatrical release for this picture were major factors in ended his directorial career, although his acting career continued unabated.

The stars include Pat Boone, Ann-Margret, Bobby Darin, Pamela Tiffin, Tom Ewell, Alice Faye, Wally Cox, Clem Harvey, Robert Foulk, Linda Henrich, David Brandon, and Tap Canutt, son of Yakima Canutt. “State Fair,” despite obvious deficiencies, is still a watchable movie but was a flop at the box office for producer Charles Brackett and 20th Century Fox. The music was composed by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and the screenplay by Richard L. Breen.

The four major movie renditions of the 1932 novel “State Fair” by Phil Strong: 1: “State Fair” (1933) starring Janet Gaynor and Will Rogers. It was not a musical, and was nominated for two Oscars – Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. 2: “State Fair” (1945) starring Jeanne Crain and Dana Andrews, with Rodgers and Hammerstein music. Nominated for two Oscars, winning one for Best Song. 3: “State Fair” starring Pat Boone and Ann-Margaret. It had new songs by Rodgers. 4: “State Fair” starring Vera Miles and Linda Purl, a made-for-television movie on CBS.
