The “Downton Abbey” franchise concludes its long run in an impressive and memorable fashion in “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.” Director Simon Curtis (“My Week with Marilyn” 2011) and producer-screenwriter Julian Fellowes put together a high quality film with marvelous production values, an outstanding musical score by John Lunn, good writing, and wonderful performances by the cast. Two storylines in the finale involve a scandal caused by the divorce of the Crawley’s oldest daughter and major financial problems plaguing the family.
The large troupe of actors includes Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley, Elizabeth McGovern as Cora Crawley, Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael as their daughters, Jim Carter as the head butler, Phyllis Logan as the housekeeper, Paul Giamatti as Cora’s brother, Penelope Wilton as Isobel Grey, Joely Richardson as Sara, Sophie McShera as Daisy, as well as Raquel Cassidy, Paul Copley, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Leslie Nicol, Douglas Reith, Dominic West, Simon Russel Beale, Arty Froushan, and Alessandro Nivola.
The very watchable “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” has been a success in theatrical release, coming in at number three in box office in its premiere on the September 12 weekend. Good news for producer Julian Fellowes, Carnival Films, and Focus Features. The “Downton Abbey” television program ran for six series from 2010-2015. The first two feature motion pictures were “Downton Abbey” (2019) and “Downton Abbey: A New Era” (2022). “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” wraps up the series quite nicely.
