My Review
British actress Naomi Ackie does a wonderful job of portraying a legendary entertainer in “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Ackie captured Houston’s personality without overwhelming the audience with her own presence. This “authorized” biopic is a fitting tribute to Houston’s life and music, with generous doses of the later spread throughout the picture.
Director Kasi Lemmons (“Harriet” 2019) and screenwriter Anthony McCarten (“The Two Popes” 2019) did a good job of portraying the various stages of her life, including her start in the church choir, her relationship with her parents including gospel singer Cissy Houston, rise to stardom, marriage to Bobby Brown, and her problem with drug addiction.
The supporting cast turned out some good performances including Stanley Tucci as record producer Clive Davis, Ashton Sanders as Brown, and Tamara Tunie and Clarke Peters as her parents. “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is a very watchable movie, but underperformed at the box office, partly due to competition with the blockbuster “Avatar: The Way of Water,” much to the disappointment of Sony Pictures and producers Clive Davis and Pat Houston (Whitney’s sister-in-law).
