My Review

“Support Your Local Gunfighter” is a western comedy about a con man who drifts into a small town and takes advantage of rivalries between gold-mining factions. As best as we can tell amongst the confusion, they soon realize what is going on and, as a result, his gig is up. The bewildering storyline and plot is the result of terrible direction by Burt Kennedy (“The War Wagon” 1967) and unfocused writing by James Edward Grant. It is a sequel of sorts to “Support Your Local Sheriff” (1969), both of which feature James Garner.

The supporting cast behind Garner includes Suzanne Pleshette, Harry Morgan, Jack Elam, John Dehner, Marie Windsor, Roy Glenn, Dub Taylor, Joan Blondell, Ellen Corby, Kathleen Freeman, Henry Jones, Virginia Capers, Ben Cooper, Grady Sutton, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, Gene Evans, and Chuck Connors as Swifty Morgan. The unwatchable “Support Your Local Gunfighter” was a flop at the box office for producer Burt Kennedy and United Artists.
