My Review

“The Running Man” is a futuristic tale where America is ruled by a dictator, and the most popular television show features prisoners who must run to freedom to avoid a brutal death. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays one such man, who has an extra challenge in his escape due to being out of favor with the game’s host. Director Paul Michael Glaser (“Band of the Hand” 1986) has put together a run-of-the-mill science fiction film from a mediocre script by Steven E. de Souza, adapted from a stupid 1982 Stephen King novel.

The two principal actors are well cast in their roles: Schwarzenegger as the running man and Richard Dawson as the game show host. Arnold has done a lot of running and Dickie is a veteran game show host (“The Match Game” 1973-1978 & “Family Fued” 1976-1985). Co-stars include Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jim Brown, Jesse Ventura, Dweezil Zappa, and Mick Fleetwood as Mic.

Two of the movie’s cast members later served as governors of U. S. states: Jesse Ventura of Minnesota (1999-2003) and Arnold Schwarzenegger of California (2003-2011). The barely watchable “The Running Man” was a flop at the box office for Braveworld Productions, Taft Entertainment Pictures, Keith Barish Productions, and Tri-Star Pictures.
