My Review

“Flubber” is a comedy film about a college professor who develops a rubber-like substance which bounces all over the place and seems to have a mind of its own. The prof gets so excited and involved with his invention that he misses his own wedding. The story stumbles on from there. Unfortunately, this promising premise flops because of the lackluster direction by Les Mayfield (“Encino Man” 1992) and a poorly written script by John Hughes and Bill Walsh.

“Flubber” is a bad remake of 1961’s “The Absent-Minded Professor” starring Fred MacMurray. Robin Williams is the replacement for MacMurray here, with mediocre results. Co-stars include Marcia Gay Harden, Christopher McDonald, Wil Wheaton, Edie McClurg, Raymond J. Barry, Clancy Brown, Ted Levine, Sam Lloyd, Jodi Benson as the voice of Weebo, and Nancy Olson in an uncredited cameo as a Ford Company secretary. She appeared as MacMurray’s fiance in the original and its sequel “Son of Flubber” (1963).

However, the nearly unwatchable “Flubber” was a success at the box office for producer John Hughes, Walt Disney Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company.
