Filmmaker Michael Tolkin (“The Player” 1992) has given us a comprehensive look at the development and production of the landmark film “The Godfather” in the miniseries “The Offer.” The ten part series, which originally ran from April to June, 2022, on the Paramount+ streaming channel, clearly portrays the difficulties with casting, production, and other problems that threatened the making of this film, not the least of which were protests from the Italian-American community, including Frank Sinatra, U. S. Rep. Mario Biaggi, and gangster Joe Colombo, who founded the Italian-American Civil Rights League in this time frame.
Executive producer and teleplay author Tolkin and his four directors organized the massive amount of information and events clearly enough for viewers to follow for ten hours. Kudos to directors Dexter Fletcher (Episodes 1, 2), Adam Arkin (3, 4, 9, 10), Colin Bucksley (5, 6), and Gwyneth Horder-Payten (7, 8). The primary source of information for this movie was from “Godfather” producer Albert S. Ruddy himself to teleplay author Tolkin. Other executive producers include Miles Teller, Albert Ruddy, Dexter Fletcher, and Nikki Toscano.
The large cast all delivered marvelous performances, headed by Miles Teller as Ruddy, Matthew Goode as Robert Evans, Dan Fogler as Francis Ford Coppola, Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo, Burn Gorman and Colin Hanks as studio brass, and Juno Temple as Evan’s secretary. Others include Lou Ferrigno, Jake Cannavale, Josh Zuckerman, Anthony Ippolito, Danny Nucci, Eric Balfour, et al.
Other notables deserving a shout-out include Patrick Gallo as Mario Puzo, Frank John Hughes as Frank Sinatra, Meredith Garretson as Ali MacGraw, Brandon Sklenar as Burt Reynolds, David Salansky as Dr. Henry Kissinger, and Justin Chambers as Marlon Brando.
“The Offer” is a very entertaining and watchable ten hour film from Paramount Pictures, already out on DVD.
