“The Outsiders” is a coming-of-age drama about teenagers in a rural Oklahoma gang called the Greasers. They encounter big trouble when they get into a brawl that ends with the death of a rival gang member. This barely interesting and rough-hewn drama seemed to have slipshod direction by Francis Ford Coppola (“The Godfather” 1972). The mediocre screenplay was written by Kathleen Rowell, adapted from the 1967 novel by S. E. Hinton.
The ensemble cast, probably too large for Coppola to direct effectively, includes numerous young actors making their screen debut or first big roles, including Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, and Leif Garrett. Co-stars include Glenn Withrow, Darren Dalton, Michelle Mayrink, Gailard Sartain, Tom Waits, William Smith, and Sofia Coppola (daughter of the director). The borderline watchable/unwatchable movie “The Outsiders” was a modest hit at the box office for Zoetrope Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.
