My Review

“Jane Eyre” is the story of an English servant girl who falls in love with the lord of the manor, a much older man. They seem headed for domestic bliss when a big secret comes out which changes everything. Director Delbert Mann (“Marty” 1955) put together a high-quality romantic drama from a well written screenplay by Jack Pulman, adapted from the 1847 novel of the same name by Charlotte Bronte.

The cast is headed by Susannah York as Jane Eyre and George C. Scott as Edward Rochester, delivering solid performances. Scott and York were two of the top movie actors of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The supporting cast includes Rachel Kempson (mother of Lynn Redgrave and Vanessa Redgrave), Jack Hawkins, Jean Marsh, Clive Morton, Ian Bannen, Nyree Dawn Porter, and Sara Gibson as Jane Eyre as a child. The watchable “Jane Eyre” was produced by Omnibus Productions and British Lion Film Corporation. John Williams composed the film’s musical score.
