My Review

“Sleepless in Seattle” is a romantic comedy movie about a woman in Baltimore who hears the sad story of a recently widowed man from Seattle on a talk-radio program. She attempts to get in touch with him, not as easy as it sounds, with the romance and comedy proceeding from there. Director Nora Ephron (“This is My Life” 1992) put together a solid and well-structured romantic comedy, which is reminiscent of films which came out of old Hollywood. (In fact, Ephron was daughter of Henry and Phoebe Ephron, who were screenwriters from the 1940’s to the early 1960’s.) She co-wrote the sterling screenplay with David S. Ward and Jeff Arch, who created the storyline.

Tom Hanks and Megan Ryan are the stars of the show with excellent chemistry. Their winsome personalities and exceptional talent dominated the big screen from start to the satisfying finish. Co-stars include Bill Pullman, Rob Reiner, Ross Malinger, Rosie O’Donnell, Rita Wilson (wife of Tom Hanks), David Hyde Pierce, Dana Ivey, Calvin Trillin, Gaby Hoffman, Victor Garber, and Michael Badalucco as a New York City cab driver. It was a huge hit at the box office for TriStar Pictures, and was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Screenplay and Best Original Song (“A Wink and a Smile” Mark Shaiman).
