My Review

Executive producer Steven Spielberg and producer-director Damien Chazelle (“La La Land” 2016) take a look at the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong in “First Man.” This movie has a dull feel to it, with no energy in the screenplay written by Josh Singer and underwhelming performances by cast members.

In addition, the film is too long at 141 minutes; Spielberg and Chazelle should have just made a documentary instead of this full-blown feature length motion picture adaptation of James R. Hansen’s 2005 book “First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong.” There were reports in the media that the film did not include a scene of Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin planting the American flag on the moon. This no doubt put a damper on box office attendance.

Actors include Ryan Gosling (the star of “La La Land”) and Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth of the first two seasons of “The Crown”) as Neil and Janet Armstrong. The later was one of six Oscar nominees for the picture, with one win for Best Original Score. Supporting cast includes Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stall, Pablo Schreiber, Lukas Haas, Ethan Embry, Ciaran Hinds, Brian d’Arcy James, and John David Whalen as John Glenn.

Overall, “First Man” has an artsy film feel to it, not high quality entertainment that we have come to expect from Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Pictures.
