My Review

The inspirational story of Jackie Robinson is told in the very classy motion picture “42.” Director-screenwriter Brian Helgeland (“A Knight’s Tale” 2001) has come up with a real gem here. And “42” seems to pass the historical accuracy test as Jackie’s widow Rachel Robinson and his teammate Ralph Branca are listed as consultants to the film.

“42” focuses on Robinson’s 1946 season with the Montreal Royals, the AAA team of the Dodgers’ farm team, and his 1947 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The film has a good balance between the behind the scenes business dealings, personal drama, and the on-field baseball action.

Chadwick Boseman is a good choice to play Robinson, with his youthful zeal and personal integrity. He is paired with Harrison Ford, who is surprisingly authentic in his portrayal of Branch Rickey, a veteran baseball general manager who wants to integrate Major League Baseball. The personal Christian faith of both Robinson and Rickey is accurately portrayed here.

The supporting cast includes Christopher Meloni as Leo Durocher, Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese, Nicole Beharie as Rachel Robinson, Hamish Linklater as Ralph Branca, Max Gail as Burt Shotton, Jud Tylor as Lorraine Day, Peter MacKenzie as MLB Commissioner Happy Chandler, as well as Ryan Merrman, Alan Tudyk, T. R. Knight, Brett Cullen, and Andre Holland. “42” was successful at the box office for Warner Bro. Pictures.
