My Review

One of the best westerns to come out of Hollywood in years is “3:10 to Yuma,” a remake of the 1957 Columbia Pictures film of the same name. Director James Mangold (“Walk the Line” 2005) gave us this story of a Yankee Civil War veteran who volunteers to deliver a criminal to the 3:10 train to Yuma to stand trial. It has everything, including action, adventure, great dialogue, wonderful acting, and beautiful scenes shot in New Mexico under the guidance of cinematographer Phedon Papamichael.

Mangold extracted outstanding performances from the actors, especially Russell Crowe as the heavy of the piece and Christian Bale as the good guy. Bale and Crowe have good chemistry to boot. The supporting cast includes Logan Lerman, Peter Fonda, Ben Foster, Dallas Roberts, Vanessa Shaw, Alan Tudyk, Gretchen Mol, Kevin Durand, and Luke Wilson as Zeke.

Kudos to producer Cathy Konrad, director James Mangold, and screenwriters Halsted Welles, Derek Haas, and Michael Brandt for putting together a watchable movie “3:10 to Yuma,” successful in theatrical release for Relativity Media, Tree Line Film, and Lionsgate Films.
