“3:10 to Yuma” is a western film about an Arizona rancher who volunteers to single-handedly escort a murderer from Bisbee to Contention City aboard a stagecoach to catch the 3:10 train to Yuma, Arizona, where he will be given a fair trial by jury. Director Delmer Daves (“Jubal” 1956) created quite a memorable drama-filled movie from an excellent script by Halsted Welles, adapted from a 1953 short story “Three-Ten to Yuma” by Elmore Leonard.
The cast includes Van Heflin as the rancher, Glenn Ford as the murderer, Felicia Farr, Leora Dana, Henry Jones, Richard Jaeckel, Robert Emhardt, Sheridan Comerate, George Mitchell, Robert Ellenstein, and Ford Rainey as the Marshal of Bisbee. The watchable black-and-white movie “3:10 to Yuma” was a modest success at the box office for Columbia Pictures. A noted remake of the same name was released in 2007 starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.
