“300” is a accurate retelling of a key historic battle that changed the course of history. The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B. C. was between an alliance of Greek city states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the invading army-navy of the Persian Empire of Xerxes I. Although the Greeks lost the battle, the delay by 300 brave Spartans allowed the city-states to regroup and later defeat and expel the Persians from the European continent.
Director Zach Snyder (“Dawn of the Dead” 2004) made the film in a shot-for-shot adaptation of the comic book “300” by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. The screenplay was taken from the comic as well, with liberties taken here and there.
Using the digital backlot technique, Snyder shot the action with blue screens in the background. Later in post-production, bluescreen footage was added with more than 1,500 visual effects. Various fantasy creatures are used, including animatronic horses, giant elephants, and one wolf.
An international cast was employed in the film. Gerard Butler as Leonides and Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes head up the list of outstanding actors, including Lena Headley, Giovanni Cimmino, Dominic West, Vincent Regan, Tom Wisdom, Andrew Pleavin, Stephen McHattie, Michael Fassbender, Kelly Craig, and David Wenham as the narrator and a Spartan soldier.
“300” was a big smash hit at the box office for Cruel and Unusual Films, Virtual Studios, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures. A sequel was released in 2014, “300: Rise of an Empire,” which was also popular with movie audiences everywhere!
