My Review

“3 Godfathers” is a western film telling the story of three bank robbers who “adopt” a newborn baby from a dying woman. They are on the run from the law at the time and struggling for survival in the desert while caring for the infant. This John Ford-directed classic is a western version of the Three Wise Men in the Gospels.

The expert direction of Ford and screenplay by Laurence Stallings, Frank S. Nugent, and Robert Nathan holds the viewers’ attention throughout the 106 minute running time. Great acting by John Wayne, Harry Carey Jr., Pedro Armendariz, Jane Darwell, Mildred Natwick, Ward Bond, Ben Johnson, Mae Marsh, Dorothy Ford, Charles Halton, Hank Worden, and Guy Kibbee as the Judge.

The very watchable “3 Godfathers” was a hit at the box office for producer John Ford, Argosy Pictures, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed in Technicolor in Death Valley, California, by cinematographer Winton Hoch.
